If you've ever read Al Ries and Jack Trout's The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, you'll understand the inspiration behind this.

Their premise was simple. Despite all the noise, trends, and changing tactics, certain principles of marketing remain remarkably consistent.

I believe the same holds true for email.

After nearly 30 years in marketing, both building brands and helping others grow theirs, I've watched the tools, technology, and tactics evolve. Automation, personalization, AI. The sophistication is impressive, but I'm not convinced we've become equally sophisticated at communicating with people.

Sometimes, I think we've made something relatively simple unnecessarily complicated.

Email marketing isn't fundamentally about technology. It's about people, relationships, and earning a little space in someone's day.

These ten laws aren't meant to be revolutionary. In fact, I'd argue most are common sense. But common sense has a funny way of getting lost when we're chasing metrics, testing the latest tools, or trying to squeeze another percentage point out of a campaign.

So, in the spirit of Ries and Trout, here are my 10 Immutable Laws of Email Marketing. Why only ten? Well, Ries and Trout came up with 22, so I've conveniently left myself room for another 12. Give me time.

1. Respect the Inbox.

An email address is permission, not entitlement. Earn the next open.

2. Know Who You’re Talking To.

Relevance starts with understanding the person, not the platform.

3. Every Email Campaign Needs a Reason to Exist.

If you can’t explain why someone should care, don’t send it.

4. Clarity Beats Cleverness.

Be interesting, but never make people work to understand you.

5. Brevity Is a Discipline.

Say what needs to be said. Then stop.

6. Give More Than You Ask.

Not every email needs to sell. Teach, help, entertain, inspire, or simply be useful.

7. The Subject Line Makes a Promise.

The email must deliver on it. Curiosity is good. Trickery is not.

8. Send to People, Not Lists.

Segment by behaviour, intent, engagement, and relationship. More sends do not equal more revenue.

9. Protect the Relationship.

A conversion today is never worth damaging trust tomorrow.

10. Earn the Next Email.

The true measure of a good email isn’t just whether it gets opened, clicked, or converted. It’s whether the person is glad they received it.
